Teen Start-Up: The Science of Everyday - 11 & 12 January 2018

All around us, the wonder of science is going unnoticed. Hidden in the things we take for granted is the “Science of Everyday”.


Does your child like coming up with ideas? Do they have an active imagination and like to solve problems? The Science of Everyday is a school holiday program specifically designed to cultivate curious, creative thinkers.

Through games, building activities and design challenges children will be introduced to the role played by the natural, formal and social sciences in everyday life.

The program is suitable for students aged 8-11 years (no previous science ability is assumed).

When:
Thursday 11 & Friday 12 January 2018, 9:00am - 4:00pm
(Registration from 8:30am, and supervision provided until 4:30pm)

Cost:
$180.00 (+GST) per student for the two-day program
$160.00 (+GST) per student for 2 or more children

What to bring:

  • Water bottle, lunch and snacks (no nuts!) each day
  • Hats and sunscreen for outdoor activities

Creative Thinking Challenge
How does your brain work?
Activity: Can you design a fun game to develop memory,
balance or hearing

Collaboration Challenge
What is Citizen Science?
Activity: How can you get involved?
Let’s put Citizen Science into action.

Communication Challenge
How does advertising persuade?
Activity: Can you sell flies to the outback or ice to Eskimos?
Have fun designing and presenting advertisements.

Idea Generation Challenge
Science and recycling in the home
Activity: Can you design a product or service for the home to
make people better recyclers?

Day 2 (Friday 12 January):

Design Thinking Challenge
What makes a house, energy efficient?
Activity: Can you design your dream energy efficient home?

Critical Thinking Challenge
How are cities designed?
Activity: Let’s plan and build a suburb.

Problem Solving Challenge
What is the sharing economy?
Activity: How can the residents of your suburb share resources?

Collaboration Challenge
Powering our Cities
Activity: Let’s bring all our suburbs together and
power our city using renewable energy.
